Devizes

Caen Hill Locks, On The Kennet And Avon Canal, Devizes

Devizes' distinctly medieval sites of interest stand apart from the usual lot of Wiltshire historic market towns in South West Britain. From self-guided tours of the old town centre and the local brewery, first-time travellers visiting Devizes for the day will be delighted at the rich heritage of the town and the hundreds of listed buildings in Devizes. So make plans to visit Devizes this travel season and walk along the cobbled alleyways and canal footpaths this spring.

Devizes History

Unlike the vast majority of historic market towns in the county, Devizes was omitted from the 11th century Domesday Book. Although, during this same time period, Devizes was already inhabited under the rule of the Normans, who erected a castle spot on in present day town centre. Also, Devizes was granted its first official market charter in the early 13th century, and the town has remained true to its founding even in the present day.

Devizes endured a rather harrowing period of conflicts during the Middle Ages and the English Civil War. As a result, the old Norman castle was alternately ruined and rebuilt several times over the centuries. The current privately owned Victorian era castle dates to the 19th century and stands as a reminder of Devizes' tumultuous moments in history.

What's On in Devizes

Without a doubt, the top attraction in Devizes is days out in the weekly markets. In fact, every Thursday Devizes coordinates an outdoor market near the old medieval market square and an indoor market in the area of town known as the Shambles, too. Aside from browsing local artisan wares, Devizes market days out are a great opportunity to enjoy the town's cafes and traditional British pubs near the high street.

If you fancy historical sites of interest, you would do well to visit the local tourist information centre and follow the town's official Medieval Trail. Beginning in the old market square, the trail guides you through the town's main grade listed buildings and landmarks. Also, history enthusiasts simply must visit the Wiltshire Heritage Museum.

Community-sponsored events abound in Devizes as you might expect of a traditional market town. Devizes even coordinates several festivals throughout the year such as the Devizes Carnival in the autumn, and the Devizes Festival in the early summer draws throngs of revelers from the whole of Wiltshire.

Travelling to Devizes

Devizes lost its railway platform during the Beeching Axe of the 1960's unfortunately, but still the town is well served by roads. Ironically, Devizes lack of a railway is actually part of the town's charm, according to repeat visitors to Wiltshire.

To travel to Devizes, motor along the M4 away from greater London to the number 15 junction near Swindon. After the junction, keep watch for the A4361 and travel south to the A361 in order to reach Devizes.

Devizes Places to Stay

Devizes has several highly reviewed hotels and bed and breakfasts conveniently situated in the heart of town centre. If you prefer rural accommodations, however, you will find additional places to stay to the northwest, as well.
