History
Although settlements were found in the Ellesmere Port area from the time of the Domesday Book, the first houses built in Ellesmere Port were constructed surrounding the docks along the earliest main street known as Dock Street many centuries later. Ellesmere Port was built to be a port that served a new means of reaching the sea from Shropshire, Ellesmere, and the border area with Wales. The Ellesmere Canal made this possible when it connected the Dee and Mersey Rivers. The canal reached the Mersey River in Netherpool that was soon renamed for the canal. By 1795 the connection had been finished, and the newly named Port of Ellesmere began to grow into Ellesmere Port. With the industrial areas growing up subsequently along the canal, the docks began to pull more workers to the town that continued to grow. It developed into a significant industrial center by the 1800's and 1900's.
