Falmouth

Gyllyngvase Beach Falmouth

Falmouth, a port city on the south coast, celebrates its seafaring history with the National Maritime Museum Cornwall. The museum has traditionally taken a look at Cornwall, its boats and seafarers, but now the museum is also spotlighting exhibits on lighthouses and their keepers. Visitors can also learn boatbuilding from ongoing boat restoration projects at the museum.

Pendennis Castle dates from the days when Henry VIII made it a coastal stronghold. During World War II, the castle became a secret base. Today, visitors can tour the castle's keep and battlements. A Discovery Centre educates visitors on the castle's military roles through the centuries. Nearby along the coast, a National Seal Sanctuary is a rescue center that is home to seals and their pups, sea lions and otters living in five large pools. Visitors can also observe the sanctuary's hospital.

Falmouth boasts several relaxing gardens, including the Trebah Garden, a subtropical garden with a beach on the Helford River. Glendurgan Garden features camellias, magnolias and a restored laurel maze. Burcoose Gardens and Nursery offer plant-loving visitors loads of inspiration.

Visitors looking for beaches can find award-winning Gyllyngvase Beach or family-friendly Maenporth Beach, among others. Outdoor adventurers will enjoy BF Adventure, which offers visitors a choice of archery, abseiling, climbing and a zip line as well as other activities. Enterprise Boats offers cruises on The River Fal between Falmouth and Truro; two-hour as well as day-long and specialty cruises area available. Holiday travelers who love the sea can take advantage of Sailaday Falmouth day trips on a 33-foot Westerly.

For the visitor wanting indoor options, Ships and Castles Leisure Centre, open year-round, has a pool and fitness suite that visitors can access with short-term memberships. The Princess Pavilion has live music and entertainment year round. Raze the Roof is an indoor playground for children and adults alike.

Shoppers in Falmouth can find national well-known department stores and small specialty shops, boutiques, antique shops and bookstores on the town's cobbled waterfront streets. Restaurants serve traditional Cornish cuisine, including the famous Cornish pasties that were originally the types of lunches miners ate. International cuisines are also available. Two pubs located next to the port each offer waterfront beer gardens.
