Farnham

William Cobbett Birthplace In Farnham

Farnham lies on the western boundary of Surrey south-east of greater London. Due to the town's location at the foot of the outstanding natural beauty of Surrey Hills, Farnham has a well earned reputation as an ideal jump-off destination for visits to the North Downs Way and Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. So if you are in search of a well travelled holiday destination surrounded by pleasant countryside, choose Farnham this holiday season.

History

Archaeologists have unearthed evidence of human habitation in the hills about Farnham which dates to the early Stone Age, according to some estimates. In addition to these ancient Mesolithic artefacts, other excavations suggest that the undulating hills of Farnham were once home to early settlers during the Iron and Bronze Ages, as well.

In a similar fashion as other ancient market towns in Britain, Farnham was inhabited by the Romans for a number of centuries before the Saxons claimed the area in the 7th century. William the Conqueror named Farnham in his Domesday Book of the 11th century. And during this era, Farnham Castle was erected in order to accommodate the town's ever growing population of farmers and travelling merchants en route to Winchester. So if you are interested in a Surrey town steeped in a harrowing heritage, look no further than Farnham this holiday season.

What's on

One of the best aspects of Farnham is the town's varied architecture and design. Farnham is home to several locally owned and operated artisan and speciality shops just off the high street. And not surprisingly, many of these businesses have been in continual operation for more than a century.

In addition to local shops, Farnham also hosts a bustling market on the first weekend of each month and a local farmer's market at the conclusion of each month. The main open green space in Farnham is Farnham Park, also the location of the ruins of Farnham Castle. And Farnham Maltings has a full schedule of goings-on such as comedy nights, cinema events and even operatic performances, too.

Transportation

You can arrive straightaway in Farnham by utilising the A31 trunk road which originates in Guildford to the west of Farnham town centre. As an alternate route, you can reach Farnham via the M3 Motorway which lies to the north of town centre. Keep watch for the A325 interchange as you leave the city, however. Then, continue south by way of Farnborough in order to reach Farnham proper.

But a large number of travellers from greater London prefer to ride the rail to Farnham Rail Station through London Waterloo Station in the heart of the capital. And coach services and other routes from Heathrow Airport extend well into Surrey, as well.

Places to Stay

Farnham is well known in the region for its quality, affordable accommodations. So if you are interested in staying the night in town centre, you have several options to choose from. And other accommodations are located a short drive north and west of town centre proper, as well.
