History and Architecture
The first charter for individuals residing in Fowey was drawn up in 1300. The naturally formed harbour encouraged merchants and owners of ships to settle there. Then, over the years, Plymouth became such a prosperous port that Fowey's smaller port did not receive as much business. Fishing became a more common pursuit for village residents.
There are several historical buildings dating from the Middle Ages. Fowey Parish Church, built in the 1400s with improvements made in the 1500s, has a tower and buttresses. St Catherine's Castle sits on a hill overlooking the harbour on the southern side of town. It is a stronghold authorized by Henry VIII.
Culture and Places of Interest
There is a cross under the cliffs on the eastern shore at the river's beginning. Legend tells that Jesus visited this harbour as a child. Legend also tells of two other Christian figures: Joseph of Arimethea, said to have settled in Fowey as a merchant, and a Johnny May, a Methodist preacher, who, during persecution, had a secret chapel on a grassy ledge below the lighthouse on the western cliff above the harbour.
Writers find this seaport a serene, inspirational location for writing. Three famous writers finding insight in Fowey were Daphne du Maurier, Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, and Kenneth Graham.
The town holds a Christmas Market for the season. The event occurs the first weekend in December.
Then the Fowey Community Leisure Centre on Windmill Street is a sports hall connected with the Fowey Community College The town uses it during evenings, weekends, and school breaks. Fowey holds a market there and often events, live music and more.
