Henley-On-Thames

Henley-On-Thames

The riverside town lies in the southeast corner of Oxfordshire. Henley was first documented as the location where Henry II purchased land for the purpose of construction. In 1199, the manor house and town were endowed to Robert Harcourt. The first church was established in 1204. John De Molyns acquired the town in 1337, and his family would hold the manor house for 250 years.

The Black Death devastated Henley and cost the town around 60 percent of its residents. Henley continued growing and expanded along the banks along the river in the 1500s. The community incorporated in 1568.

The river location was especially beneficial for industry and trade. During the next two centuries, Henley townspeople produced corn and wool for export. Glass and malting manufacturers emerged. Via the Thames, Henley regularly supplied London with grain and timber. The aquatic location also popularises Henley for the town's rowing events. Famous one-time residents include author George Orwell, Beatle George Harrison and singer Dusty Springfield.

From the wooded hills to the river banks, Henley offers many picturesque destinations for cycling, walking or boating. The River Rowing Museum celebrates the popular sport that began in the 1100s.
