Hereford

Hereford Cathedral

Hereford, the cathedral city of Herefordshire, is situated in the West Midlands of Britain. And every year thousands of travellers converge upon Hereford in order to have a day out in one of the most pastoral, quiet cities in the country.

The people of Hereford pride themselves on their long and storied heritage, which dates back to the age of the Anglo-Saxon kings. Visit Hereford during the summer and have a guided tour of the city's sites of interest. But don't forget to have a pour of one of Herefordshire's terrific ciders for which the county is famous. You might say that enjoying one of these fresh, organically produced beverages is worth the price of travelling to the West Midlands.

Hereford Cathedral

Perhaps, the top attraction in Hereford remains the old cathedral in the midst of town centre that dates to the 11th century, according to historical records. In actuality, the origins of Hereford Cathedral stretch even further back to the early centuries of the first millennium. But officially, the cathedral was consecrated in 1079.

The cathedral's primary claim to fame is the "mappa mundi". As a visually stunning relic of the late 13th century, the mappa mundi draws visitors from the whole of Britain and across the world, all eager for a glimpse of one of the largest ancient maps that has survived into the contemporary era. Interestingly, the mappa mundi, which translates into "map of the world", has only recently been restored to its current state.

High Town

Hereford Cathedral aside, another well-known attraction of the city of Hereford remains the area named High Town by local residents. This traffic-free, pedestrian section of Hereford town centre is considered by many frequent travellers as the heart of the city. And certainly, High Town's reputation in Herefordshire proceeds itself. Within walking distance of the city's railway station, High Town allows you to partake of a leisurely stroll through the historic core of Hereford. The Maylord Shopping Centre also lies along the boundaries of High Town for those with an itch to peruse Hereford's retail shops and craft stores.

Transportation to Hereford

You can reach Hereford by rail utilising the Welsh Marches Line by way of Leominster and Abergavenny. Hereford Railway Station rests a short distance from High Town and the Hereford Cathedral. So a large number of day trippers prefer to ride the rail out to Herefordshire.

But if you would prefer to travel to Hereford by car, you can reach the city a number of ways. Primarily, the city is served by roads that extend from Birmingham, which lies north-east of Hereford. There are several different routes through the Herefordshire countryside that will take you into Hereford proper. But to arrive in Hereford straightaway through Birmingham, follow the A456 away from Birmingham until you reach the A49. Then, simply travel south in order to arrive in the core of Hereford.

Places to Stay in Hereford

Hereford's accommodations are well-reviewed by passing visitors and holiday makers alike. So if you decide to make your day trip an overnight stay, look for places to stay near High Town and the rail station. But you can also find spot on accommodations south of Hereford's High Town, too.
