Hertford

Hertford Castle

Associated with legends of the Knights Templar and the Holy Grail, the ancient town lies in the southeastern portion of Hertfordshire. The settlement was first mentioned in 673 AD and is where the Bishops of England met and determined the date for the Christian holiday Easter. Edward the Elder built two earthwork fortresses along the River Lea in 912 AD. By 1086, the village had two churches, two markets and three running mills. Around this time the Normans were constructing a castle, which would be fortified with stone in 1216. Edward II and Queen Isabella died in the castle in 1358.

Being at the confluence of four rivers, Hertford was a favoured destination for many royals, but the outbreak of The Plague in London brought Parliament to the castle in 1565. This prospering city advanced with the development of the canal in 1767 and the railway in 1843. Hertford has many industries including one of the few remaining independent breweries in Britain. The rock band Deep Purple formed here in 1968. Harry Potter star Rupert Grint grew up in Hertford and attended Richard Hale School before filming began.

Activities and Attractions

Hertford Castle now houses the offices of the local government. The structure, built in 1463 sits over the original Norman fortress. The facility allows private tours and regularly hires out for private venues. The Hertford Museum, housed in a historic building, tells the tale of Hertford from the age of the dinosaurs to modern day civilization through numerous artefacts and displays. Visitors see everything from mammoth bones to gramophones.

On a hill overlooking Hertford and the river valley lies the oldest building in the city. St. Leonard's church is a Norman structure constructed around 900 years ago. Passing through the massive wooden beam doors of the church, visitors gaze upon elaborate stone carvings, stained glass windows and wall paintings created centuries ago. The ancient stone structure has a uniquely rounded apse and the churchyard contains ancient grave markers.

In keeping with the history of the past, guests might be interested in visiting the Celtic Harmony Camp. This working village commemorates the civilization of ancestors through thatched roundhouses and activities. Visitors have the opportunity of cooking over a fire or testing long bow skills on the archery field. Hear the tales of old, enjoy the music and dance, and capture a glimpse of primitive life.

Places to Stay and Dining

Enjoy luxury and splendour while staying at a modernised coaching inns. After a long, busy day experience a facial or body treatment provided by the facility spa. Guests might also touch up a tan or have make-up applied professionally for a special night out.

The local Lussmanns restaurant specialises in pastas, salads and grills. Enjoy pork belly sauteed in marsala and served with garlic mash, or grilled yellow tuna served with shallot potato cakes.
