History
It's name deriving from the Old English word of Hythe or Hithe, defined as Haven or Landing Place, Hythe is a seaside town located in the District of Shepway. The history of this town is heavily defined by it's strategic importance as a Cinque Port town, a collection of five towns which had the royal distinction of providing men and defence to England as well as trading privileges. Although this distinction holds only symbolic value today, Hythe was the central port of the Cinque Ports group. Today, Hythe's maritime activities no longer exist, it has become also a popular place to visit with it's lively atmosphere, interesting cultural events, and it's well preserved history.
