On the northern edge of Devon, in the southwest region of England, lies the seaside resort town of Ilfracombe. Inhabited since the Iron Age, the Celts were the first who settled the area. During medieval times, around the 11th century, the manor house of Chamberombe ruled the area. In 1208, the Holy Trinity Church was constructed and the town sprang up around this parish. Farming and fishing were major industries and with an established seaport, trade between Ilfracombe and other parts of England occurred. Eventually trade would expand to West Africa and the West Indies. During the 11th century, mining industries developed and smelted tin and silver, which not only provided the town with employment opportunities, but also neighbouring villages.
The importance of the seaside port was recognised by the navy, and as early as 1208, ships and troops sailed for battle in Ireland. A century later, ships sailed to Scotland against Robert the Bruce. In the late 13th century, Ilfracombe received charter to hold markets. The town continued developing and by the Victorian period, the seaport attracted tourists. During the 18th and 19th centuries, shipbuilding entered the realm of the local industries. The seaside town has a colourful history that includes pirates, smugglers and shipwrecks.
Activities and Attractions
The beautiful seaside resort is surrounded by grassy rocky cliffs. Ilfracombe was built from the shoreline and tiered up into the hills. The opportunities for cycling and hiking are endless with paths travelling into the hills or along the coast. A colourful garden and walking path line the harbour.
Visit the mysterious Victorian beaches accessed by entering one of four tunnels, which were hand carved into the cliffs. On the other side is an enclosed beach area, which wealthy Victorians believed held a therapeutic pool. Climb to the top of Lantern Hill and admire the amazing views after visiting the medieval St. Nicholas Chapel. The building was a church in the 14th century and later converted into a lighthouse.
The waterfront provides numerous outdoor activities. Guests enjoy fishing, sailing, surfing or scuba diving. Perhaps investigate one of the many local shipwrecks. Visit the historic Holy Trinity Church, originally built in 1208. The medieval building holds evidence of Norman and Saxon influences. The Waterhouse Castle, built in the 19th century to resemble a medieval castle, houses Victorian antiques and a family theme park. There are plenty of shopping opportunities at the heart of Ilfracombe, on High Street, where visitors find everything from antique shops to a chocolate emporium.

Ilfracombe has numerous hotels, bed and breakfasts and guesthouses from which to choose. Guests find accommodations ranging from luxurious to family friendly, whether near the harbour with terrific waterfront views or in the country surrounded by lush gardens.
