Just a short distance from the M1 motorway in Derbyshire, Ilkeston lies hidden from the roads most travelled even though it is the county's third largest town. Nevertheless, Ilkeston has plenty to offer visitors passing by or settling in for an extended stay.
History
The town was ordained by Queen Victoria in 1887. Previously, Ilkeston was settled in the 9th century by the Anglo-Saxons. During the medieval period of Ilkeston's history, the township changed hands several times to a number of different families such as the Savages and the Manners.
Spa baths are another notable point of historical interest in Ilkeston. In 1831, the Ilkeston Bath was constructed to exploit the natural springs of the town. But today, the old bath house is no longer standing despite preservation efforts throughout the town's history.
Transportation in Ilkeston
Ilkeston's biggest transportation asset is its close proximity to the major thoroughfare the M1 motorway. Also of note, Ilkeston sits within 16 kilometres of both Derby and Nottingham.
The primary roads leading into Ilkeston include the A6096/Ladywood Road, the A609/Derby Road, the A6007 to the north of town, and Nottingham Road which extends from the M1. It is also worth noting that Ilkeston has no railway station despite being the third largest town in Derbyshire.
Places to visit in Ilkeston
It is an understatement to say that the citizens of Ilkeston pride themselves on their industrial heritage. A short distance from the centre of town, Ilkeston's Erewash Museum pays homage to a bygone era when Ilkeston prospered mainly through iron casting for major national projects.
Also, the Durban House Heritage Centre is an important part of the community in Ilkeston. And Ilkeston even hosts one of the largest street fairs in the UK, the Charter fair, another nod to the town's history.
Built in 1868, Ilkeston's Town Hall is one of the oldest standing structures within the town's boundaries. The local Saint Mary's Church can trace its construction back to the 13th century despite undergoing numerous renovation and expansion projects over the centuries since its inception. The church houses a crusader's tomb as well.
Places to stay in Ilkeston
The town's proximity to Nottingham provides many opportunities to book top notch accommodations. Only a short distance north of town, Ilkeston has a number of fine hotels that will graciously take on passing visitors. But as always, booking ahead of time is recommended.
Of other note, Nottingham Road is possibly one of the best areas to book a guest house near Ilkeston. Although to be fair, there are other worthy places to rest your head just west of town as well.
