Iver

Iver is the name of a parish that includes the villages of Iver itself and Iver Heath. It covers an area of around eight square miles and is just North of Richings Park. London is conveniently located only twenty miles away, making this not only a charming village and parish, but a convenient day trip out of London. The village boasts some interesting ruins and architecture as well as history going back to before the Norman Conquest. A famous movie studio is also located here.

History of the Parish and Village

Iver is an Anglo Saxon word that signifies the place that is by the brow of the hill. It is included in the Domesday Book from 1086 as Evreham, which meant the homestead near by the brow of the hill. Robert Doiley owned it at the time of the Domesday Book. Some have said that the town is named for a colleague of Doiley's, Roger de Iveri, who was another Norman that came to England with William the Conqueror. It is true that he held property in other parts of Buckinghamshire.

In 1351, Iver gained a Royal Charter to host a market every week. By 1461, the charter was renewed. Iver had become a fairly important place.

Iver Architecture

There are some interesting ruins and buildings that visitors can see in the village of Iver. The foundation of the place has yielded up potsheds and artifacts from the Neolithic times. There is a village church here with remains of a Saxon window. The church also features sections that go back to the 1400's through the 1600's. Besides this, Iver boasts a significant number of houses that were built in the 1500's and 1600's. Its interesting architecture makes it well worth a trip out to see.

Iver Parish Attractions

Within Iver Parish, in the next village Iver Heath, there is a long established drama club called the Iver Heath Drama Club. In 2008, they celebrated their sixtieth anniversary. They still put on pantomimes and plays. Visitors have enjoyed such productions as the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe; Jack and the Beanstalk; and Sleeping Beauty. A visitor should check to see if any of their productions are on when they are in the Parish.

There is also a beautiful Victorian estate found in the parish. Heatherden Hall boasts amazing grounds, an enormous ballroom and even a Turkish Bath. The deal that created the Irish Free State was signed here.

On the estate property is a movie studio named Pinewood Film Studios. There is a lake here that is used as part of the studio filming set in adjacent Black Park. The lake covers five hundred and thirty acres and can be seen in the James Bond movie Goldfinger that was filmed in part here in 1964.
