History

Not surprisingly, the course of Kenilworth's origins parallels the history of Kenilworth Castle. Kenilworth was noted in the 11th century in William the Conqueror's census the Domesday Book as small pastoral community. But in the 12th century Kenilworth Castle was constructed in the midst of town on the waters of the Mere, one of the largest man-made lakes in the whole of Britain.

Over the subsequent centuries, Kenilworth Castle grew into one of the largest fortifications in the region, even rivalling Warwick Castle to the south of town. Nevertheless, the castle was ordered to be destroyed during the conflicts of the English Civil War by the infamous Oliver Cromwell. In the early 20th century, Kenilworth Castle remained in the hands of the Lords of Kenilworth until the national trust took over care of the derelict fortification. And today, the castle ranks highly as one of the largest ruinous fortifications in the whole of Britain.
