King's Lynn

Old Industrial Buildings At Kings Lynn

The settlement was founded on the mouth of the Great River Ouse, in the western area of Norfolk. Established sometime around 900 AD, the settlement was under the jurisdiction of the Bishop. Trade along the waterways influenced early town expansion. By 1300, Kings Lynn was considered a major port. Gatehouses and city walls protected the community from invasion. Thomas Thoresby established a college in 1510 that would house local priests. The city was incorporated and elected a mayor in 1524. Kings Lynn had a grammar school in 1534 and fell under crown rule in 1537. An elaborate piped water system was established, but many could not afford a connection.

Plague ravished the city seven times between the years 1516 and 1665. A devastating fire initiated a thatched roof ban in 1572. Grain export supported the economy, while the city imported iron and timber. Wine imports starting in the early 1600s would prove a profitable trade. Farmland increased in 1650 and produce was regularly exported to London. Kings Lynn was also an important fishing port and a fishery house was constructed in 1605. Shipbuilding, glassmaking and brewing soon followed, and the city had its first bank in 1784. Later, clothing, chemicals and food canning industries found their way to Kings Lynn.
