Launceston

Pretty Bridge In Launceston

Launceston is located between Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor on the eastern border of Cornwall. The town was already well established when the Norman conquest occurred in 1066. Launceston became primarily known as a market town. A wooden castle was constructed at the time of the conquest, but was replaced with a stone castle, which partially remains today. The castle, which towers over the town, is open to visitors.

The Launceston Butter Market operates the first Saturday of each month in the Launceston Town Square, selling local produce and homemade goods such as quiches, biscuits and cakes. Handcrafted items, books and children's items also can be found at the Butter Market. The Friday Market at St Mary's Hall is a weekly event that offers similar goods.

Birdwatchers will enjoy River Tamar Birdwatching Cruises to observe the numerous wading birds and wildfowl that winter over in the area. The cruises operate a few days each month between November and February.

Nearby Camelford is reputedly the location of "Camelot", the mystical land of King Arthur and his Knights. The village of Camelford is home to a number of historic buildings from the 1600s and later.

Families with children can find a few hours or a day of fun at Trethorne Leisure Park which offers hands on fun with animals, pony rides, and indoor and outdoor play areas as well as a restaurant. The Launceston Steam Railway runs a five-mile round trip through the Kensey Valley.

Pubs and restaurants offering traditional Cornish fare are common; international cuisine includes European, Italian, Indian and Chinese offerings.
