Margate

The Clock Tower At Margate

History

Margate, a lively town with Blue Flag certified beaches in the Thanet district dates back to the Roman era. Many remnants of Roman life have been discovered in the area, including a villa.

Due to it's affiliation with the Cinque Ports as a limb port, Margate has a long and enduring maritime tradition. Due to it's location and this distinction, Margate was a main point of traffic for cargo exports such as corn as well as smuggling. Smuggling was pervasive in the 18th century in Margate because of the gaps and tunnels that dot the coastline. These gaps and tunnels were convenient for secret passageways from sea to locations inland as well as storing goods in a safe location.

The pastime of sunbathing also became popular during this time period, precipitating the rise of Margate as a seaside resort destination in the 19th century. Today, the seaside resort tradition is alive with it's scenic old town and perennially popular beaches.
