Market Harborough

Old Grammar School In Market Harborough

Formerly a part of a royal hunting forest, Harborough was built on the southern border of Leicestershire. William Mauduit, a wealthy nobleman serving in Henry II's court, acquired the land for establishing trade in 1199. The original town consisted of three manor houses and villages, the Great Bowden, Little Bowden and Arden. Some believe Mauduit intended for the latter to be the central market destination. The main street was lined with houses having farmyards in the rear, for the purpose of creating and storing goods.

The St. Dionysis Church was not constructed until one hundred years later, but the grand architecture would dominate the town's view for years. A school was established in 1614, but in keeping with the market atmosphere, the structure was created on stilts. The open area below the school once contained stalls.

Harborough was the headquarters for the King's army in 1645, the time of civil war, and the local chapel served as confinement for prisoners of war. From this town, Cromwell informed the House of Commons of the victory. Beginning in 1776, individuals purchased the open fields and less than a century later, Harborough would have a branch of the canal. By 1833, a gas company formed along with factories for brickworks, chemical development and coachworks. The town also established a brewery and a worsted spinning plant that evolved into a carpet making industry. By 1850, a corset factory, a die casting works and the first travel agency formed. Six years later Harborough became a major foxhunting destination.

Activities and Attractions

The Canal North has paths that provide an environment for scenic biking and hiking and boat hire is available. Welland Park, created along the river, also hosts a riverside walk. The park additionally contains ornamental and sculptured gardens, lawn bowling and tennis courts. Children enjoy the play area and golfers spend time at the putting green.

Guests might enjoy visiting the St. Dionysius Church, filled with beautiful stained glass windows and a tower dating back to 1300. The local Harborough Museum houses artefacts unearthed from ancient times along with Roman jewellery, pottery and gold treasures. The facility also explains local history through the industry exhibit and a unique collection contains 17th century toys.

Strolling through town, visitors have the chance of viewing many interesting buildings, including the unusual timber framed Old Grammar School. Built by Robert Smyth in 1641, the stilted structure provided protection for the buttery merchants during inclement weather.

Take a boat ride down to the Foxton Locks and witness firsthand how vessels travel through the 10 different levels. Close to the locks is the Wistow Maize Maze. The maze features a different theme every year and visitors journey through the puzzle by solving quizzes and collecting clues.
