Milton Keynes is among the largest towns found in the south east part of England. It is located in Buckinghamshire, around fifty miles to the north west of London. This bustling town offers visitors a wide variety of history, culture, entertainment, and shopping.
History of Milton Keynes
The town of Milton Keynes is actually a new master planned town that the British government created in the late sixties to relieve housing shortages around the capital. Before this, it was mostly farmlands and fields. Evidence of settlements dating back to iron age times, the Roman Empire, the Anglo Saxon age, the Norman period, the later Medieval era, and the industrial revolution have all been unearthed here before the construction of the town began. This proves that there was a rich heritage in the area despite the absence of historical towns and villages here.
Modern Milton Keynes was intended to be the largest of the new towns that the British government constructed. It had a target population of 250,000. The town has been successful in not only providing housing, but also a variety of shopping and attractions for the residents and visitors to Milton Keynes. It is considered to have among the best activities and entertainment offered in all of Great Britain.
Shopping Opportunities
Milton Keynes prides itself on having begun the modern day concept of shopping in Europe. There are huge and comprehensive shopping malls that contain more than four hundred shops in the centre of the city. Outside these malls in the surrounding areas are other unique opportunities for shopping that include farmer's markets and village shops.
Leisure Activities
Milton Keynes offers a wide variety of opportunities for leisure for the inhabitants and travelers both. There are theme parks along with 4,500 acres of woodland and parks. Families with children will love the Gulliver's Land, the Woburn Safari Park that has Britain's largest safari opportunity, and the indoor water park Splash Zone. There are also indoor sky diving opportunities, indoor skiing on actual snow, and even a new and cutting edged football stadium. The national centre for badminton is also found in Milton Keynes. No tourists here will lack for things to do.
Cultural Activities
Milton Keynes is not lacking in cultural activities either. There are galleries, theatres, and museum that have won awards. Museums in the town are the Milton Keynes Museum, the Bletchley Park, and the Cowper and Newton Museum. Milton Keynes Theatre proves to be the most successful such theatre found beyond London's West End. World famous opera, great musicals, and an annual pantomime are presented here. The Milton Keynes City Orchestra offers live classical music. It has been presenting internationally and nationally known music for in excess of thirty years.
Beside this, visitors can enjoy abbey ruins from the middle ages here. Nearby are the historical market towns of Newport Pagnell, Stony Stratford, Olney, and Wolverton. A variety of architecture and history are on display here. The visitors are sure to be thrilled with this exciting town near London.
