Nuneaton

Situated in northern Warwickshire north of the city of Coventry, Nuneaton stands apart as one of the most charming market towns in the whole of the county. From Nuneaton's weekly market to the natural beauty of the town's surrounds, enjoying days out in Nuneaton has become popular among first-time visitors and returning travellers alike in search of a quaint market town holiday away from hustle of Birmingham and Coventry.

From a historical perspective, the heritage of the town of Nuneaton dates as far back as the 11th century when the town was noted in William the Conqueror's Domesday Book. But the town's namesake reportedly dates to the 12th century with the establishment of a nunnery near town. And a century later, Nuneaton received the town's first market charter, which ceremoniously marked the town's arrival as a growing market town in northern Warwickshire.

Sites of Interest in Nuneaton

First-time visitors with a healthy interest in Nuneaton's heritage would do well to tour Arbury Hall, considered by many as one of the finest remnants of Gothic revival architecture in the whole of Britain. Interestingly, the celebrated novelist George Eliot was born on the grounds of Arbury Hall in the early 19th century. And the mansion even contains authentic period interior furnishings and other exhibitions open to the public, including a tea room adjacent to the manor.

Another important site of interest in Nuneaton is the Chilvers Coton Heritage Centre. As a grade listed structure dating to the early 18th century, the heritage centre was formerly a school commissioned by Elizabeth Newdigate and her husband Sir Roger Newdigate, the town's most prominent residents of the period. Interestingly, the Newdigates also resided in the aforementioned Arbury Hall, too.

Nuneaton Carnival

Aside from historical and cultural places of interest, Nuneaton hosts the largest and most anticipated annual summer carnival in the whole of Warwickshire the Nuneaton Carnival. The first Nuneaton Carnival began in 1930 as a charity event with proceeds supporting the local manor hospital. And today, this tradition remains as strong as ever in Nuneaton. As a matter of fact, the festivities during the Nuneaton Carnival now include a vibrant, themed procession and a full gala that raises funds in the name of several local non-profit charitable organizations.
