Oswestry

Old Oswestry Hill Fort

Oswestry rests in the north-west region of Shropshire a short distance from the Welsh border. As such, this small market town is rich in heritage and has a rather varied and intriguing culture. As a matter of fact, many street names and places about town centre reflect Oswestry's colourful origins as a former Welsh village, which attracts throngs of visitors from both sides of the border to this very day.

From a historical perspective, settlement of the area today known as Oswestry began as early as the Iron Age, according to certain archaeological evidence. Certainly, Oswestry was the site of warfare between Saxon kings in the 7th century. But it was not until the writing of the Domesday Book, an ancient census ordered during the Norman conquest of Britain in the 11th century, when Oswestry began to prosper.

Oswestry also played a prominent role during the centuries of conflict during the Middle Ages between the English and the Welsh, which attests to the rich character of Oswestry's unmistakeably British and Welsh town centre. However, Oswestry's 12th century market charter remains the town's most fortunate historic event, and every year thousands of travellers visit Oswestry's markets and explore the town's unique culture for themselves.

Oswestry Market

The citizens of Oswestry welcome day-trippers to the town's markets throughout the year. In fact, Oswestry has the distinction of offering three different markets to choose from. First, there is an indoors market in town centre that operates on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. But there is also an open-air, outdoors market held on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

In addition to these two widely popular markets, Oswestry is also home to a monthly farmer's market on the final Friday of each month. So if you are in search of a hidden-away market town full of unique character, make the trip to the Welsh border in Shropshire and visit Oswestry.
