Lying along the coastal region known as the English Riviera, Paignton is situated on the southern border of Devon, in southwestern England. Originally a Celtic settlement, the town has records dating as far back as the 11th century. Kirkham House, a renovated stone cottage located in town, is representative of life during the medieval period. In 1536, Bishop Miles Coverdale published an English translation of the bible in Paignton. The town was also once the residence of Issac Merritt Singer, founder of the now famous Singer sewing machines.
The town's economy was largely based on agriculture and fishing until constructing a harbour in 1839, and a railway in 1859. These developments provided the opportunity for trade with other areas in addition to helping form a budding tourist industry.
The town is a mixture of the present alongside yesteryear as many Victorian homes and buildings remain. The location of the popular seaside resort also has amazing scenery and views from the golden sandy beaches to the forested rolling hills.
