Par is a village located on the southern coast, just a few miles from St. Austell. The village once was home to a thriving quarrying and mining industry in the 1800s. China clay is still exported from Par's docks for use in papermaking. Famed novelist Daphne du Maurier lived in the area for many years and set several of her novels there, including her much-loved "Rebecca".
The Eden Project, the most popular tourist destination in Cornwall, is just minutes from Par. The Eden Project is a global garden built in abandoned clay mines that replicates natural gardens from around the world, in order to open visitors' eyes to the importance of environmental issues. The Rainforest Biome features a waterfall, a mini soya plantation and mangrove swamps in addition to other tropical trees and plants. The Mediterranean Biome is home to poppies and lupins, cork trees and cork sculptures, and gigantic aloe vera plants. The outdoor gardens' Spiral Path is a feast for all the senses, and other gardens offer examples of plants that provide fuel, the ingredients for beer, and hemp. The Core, an educational center, shows children and adults alike how plants and nature provide natural energy in the world today.
After visiting the Eden Project, a visitor can stop by the Mid-Cornwall Galleries, art galleries a few miles east of the village. The Charlestown Shipwreck & Heritage Center, also nearby, provides history and artifacts on historic shipwrecks, including the Titanic. Four restaurants are located nearby, offering British cuisine as well as sandwiches.
Par is in an area known as the Cornish Riviera, and the Par Sands Beach offers relaxation and opportunities for exploration. The beach is flat and the sand is of a high quality. It also features a lagoon and sand dunes that attract wildlife. Windsurfing is very popular and is allowed all year.
