The town is situated at the junction of three valleys in Glamorgan in the southeastern region of Wales. The River Rhondda flowing into the Taff comprises Pontypridd’s southern border. The community is well known for the “Old Bridge”, constructed in 1754 by William Edwards. At the time, the structure was the longest single arched bridge in the world. The bridge rises 35 feet (11m) over the water and spans 140 feet (43m) across.
Farming was the economical mainstay of Pontypridd until the development of coal and iron ore mines. Lying in the middle of three valleys proved a prime location for transporting coal and iron, via a canal and later by railway, to coastal ports.
By the middle 1800s, the valleys had 15 collieries, making the area an industrial hub. The activities of the day earned Pontypridd the nickname “Wild West. “ However, Albion colliery was the location of one of the worst mining disasters in history in 1894 when an explosion claimed the lives of 290 miners. Besides mining, Pontypridd developed anchor and chain manufacturing, along with an iron, steel and tinplating company.
The community has a list of renowned former residents that includes an eccentric physician who performed the first modern cremation. Musicians Evan and James James hail from Pontypridd and are famous for composing the Welsh National Anthem. World famous singer and recording artist Tom Jones is originally from Pontypridd.
Activities and Attractions
Strolling about town visitors encounter a fine collection of stone buildings constructed using a unique blue stone obtained from local quarries. Statues scattered around town commemorate the mines and workers from the past. Located near the Old Bridge lies the Pontypridd Museum, containing historical artefacts and information concerning the community. East of the River Taff lies the Ynysangharad Park, constructed as a war memorial in 1923. The scenic location has carefully maintained flower gardens and lanes lined by mature trees.
The natural open space known as Pontypridd Common offers amazing views over the community and boasts boulders dating from the Ice Age. One boulder in particular forms the central location of a druid stone formation. Back in the day, male members of the community practised Druid ceremonies at this location. Journeying further up the common visitors find historic white Round Houses constructed by the colourful Dr. Price. Besides a practicing Druid, the physician made history with the cremation of his infant son.
A cycle path runs beside the River Taff and travels through the local park. Anglers frequently catch large salmon and trout in the rivers. The shores also provide the opportunity for wildlife viewing as different animals also enjoy the area.
Southeast of Pontypridd lies the majestic Caerphilly Castle. Constructed in the late 1200s by Baron Gilbud de Clare, the structure is the largest castle in Wales and one of the largest in Great Britain. The formidable fortress was once surrounded by large bodies of water. The number of passageways, towers and wall walks ensured complete defence of the structure. Many portions of the inner castle remain intact. The Great Hall showcases shields on the walls, while the room itself contains typical medieval furnishings. Weaponry displays showcase everything from crossbows and swords to massive catapults.
