Prenton is a large suburb of Birkenhead. It is found on the Wirral Peninsula near the Mersey River. With around 15,000 inhabitants, Prenton is not primarily a tourist attraction, but it is mostly a residential area. It does have a famous sports park that draws visitors from around the country.
History
Prenton's history is not so important as with some other towns and villages in England. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book from 1086 as Prestune. Prenton was said to possess a nine square miles large woodland. The name probably derives from the scale and importance of this woodland, since Pren is the Briton and Welsh word for wood and the Saxon suffix tun stands for settlement. This indicates that it was a settlement in the wood. The Domesday Book talks about a water mill in Prenton. At Prenton Dell, the remains of this have been identified. This suburb of larger neighboring Birkenhead did not demonstrate any further significance until housing began to be built here in the days of King Edward.
Architecture
The oldest building in the town is probably the Halfway House public house that was built by 1879 or earlier. At the time, the town was a mere hamlet. The houses in the suburb were mostly constructed in the Edwardian Era and following this in the 1930's. There are a few buildings from the later Victorian days as well.
Attractions
The most famous thing about Prenton is the widely drawing Prenton Park. This is where the Tranmere Rovers Football Club is based. This football ground and stadium dates back to 1895. The Tranmere Rovers came to the Prenton Park stadium in 1912, after taking the grounds back from the Birkenhead Wanderers Rugby League to whom they had leased it in 1902. The stadium and grounds have been rebuilt a few times. The present day stadium contains seating for 16,567 fans in four stand sections. Today's grounds and facility are generally utilized for football matches. The Liverpool Reserves play their home games here too. For any visitors who is in the area, there are some exciting matches played here that they can enjoy.
There are also several clubs here for other outdoor sports. Rounds of golf can be enjoyed at the Prenton Golf Club. The Prenton Lawn Tennis Club allows for games of tennis to be played and watched. It was the Wirral Sports Club of the year in 2010.
