Rickmansworth

Batchworth Lock At Rickmansworth

On the convergence of the River Colne and the Grand Union Canal lies the southwestern Hertfordshire village. King Offa first established a settlement here in 793 AD. At this time, the Saxons referred to the town as Rhyckmer. By 1086, royal documents mentioned the settlement as Prickenaresworde and the property then belonged to the St. Alban convent. After 1539, the manor house and properties passed from one noble family to another. Rickmansworth's economy was based on agricultural products, a fishery and a textile industry. Watercress growing along the banks of the waterwayss were an important cash crop at the time. Locally grown corn was milled into flour.

As time passed, flock and silk mills were established along with breweries. Eventually papermaking factories came into existence. Coaching inns became a necessity. In the early 1600s, The 3rd Earl of Bedford constructed a large manor estate on the high ground of the deer park in the manor or More. The estate would pass through several owners and the original brick house would be covered in stone. During the second world war, the structure served as the headquarters for the parachute regiment and it was at this location that military leaders planned the ill-fated battle of Arnhem. The moor house manor now belongs to the Moor Park complex.
