History

Rochester, along with Canterbury, is one of the most historically significant towns in Kent. It's history dates back to the Roman times with influences from the following eras reflecting in it's architecture.

Rochester rose in prominence due to it's proximity to the confluence of the River Thames and River Medway. For centuries, Rochester was known for it's trade, naval and shipbuilding industries. Today, industries related to naval power and shipbuilding are diminished but Rochester has transitioned into a modern town which manages to preserve it's historical, literary, architectural character that has developed over the centuries.

Attractions

As one of the main large towns in Kent, there are many things to do in Rochester. For new visitors, a walking tour is ideal and readily available during the warmer months. They are provided by the city of Rochester Society and are free of charge.

One of the main must see attractions is the cathedral. The cathedral has one of the oldest building foundations in England. The church is Norman in origin but also has a strong Gothic influence in it's architecture as well. Another structure that is Norman in origin is Rochester Castle another popular attraction that is well-preserved. There are also expansive grounds on the site that is ideal for a picnic during fine weather.

For Charles Dickens fans, there are many locations located in Rochester that provided Dickens inspiration for his novels such as Restoration House and Gardens, the Satis House of "Great Expectations".

There is also a lively high street with boutiques, restaurants and independent shops as well as chain establishments.

As one of the largest cities in Kent, Rochester has plenty of options for food and accommodation. There are many restaurants,pubs, and tea rooms available near main attractions such as the cathedral as well as throughout the town.
