Sheerness

History

Unlike many towns in Kent that have origins dating back to the Middle Ages or eras prior, the first structures of Sheerness were built during the reign of Henry VIII. Henry VIII constructed a fort in order to deter enemy ships from entering the mouth of River Medway, and therefore, infiltrate English territory. In addition to these fortifications, a naval dockyard was developed in 1665. The Naval Dockyard located here would build and repair warships until it's closure in 1960.

Today, Sheerness is the capital of the Isle of Sheppey and is known more as a seaside resort that developed in the 19th century due to it's amicable weather, attractive pier and beaches.

Attractions

Sheerness is known for it's shingle beaches that have been attracting visitors for generations. Shingle Bank Beach is popular with those interested in water sports, while Sheerness Beach is popular with families and is bordered by an large area of green open space, which is ideal for a picnic. There are also other attractions located nearby Sheerness Beach. The Minster Leas is also another shingle beach but is known for it's cliff walks and superb views.

Another popular activity is to visit the Bluetown district, which is famous for the houses decorated in blue paint used by the Admiralty. Admiralty employees would pinch the paint from their respective employer. Sheerness is also known for it's curved high street dotted with boutiques, independent shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes and is the location of it's famous clock tower.
