History

Known as ancient market town that has remnants that date back to the Bronze Age, Shepton Mallet manages to retain it's past. Before the Saxons, there is to be believed a large Roman settlement in the area. The Fosse Way and its surrounding area has been the location of evacuations that hold clues to Shepton Mallet's past. Shepton Mallet is also known for its involvement with the wool and silk industries. Many of the owners of these factories also built manor houses nearby.

Today, Shepton Mallet is still a bustling market town with a charming city centre and visitors can see still see the mills, factories and manor houses that stand near each other.

Attractions

Many visitors come to Shepton Mallet in order to visit the Royal Bath & West of England Society, the showground. At the showground there is an annual agricultural fair that is the largest of it's kind in the United Kingdom. There is also Kilver Court, known for it's gardens and is a popular destination for spending the day perusing the plant's nursery, purchasing produce at the butchery and farm shop, or having a picnic in the gardens. For those interested in activities located nearby, head over to the neighbouring city of Wells; one of the most well preserved medieval towns in the UK.

The county of Somerset is known for its cheddar cheese. To see some of the caves that are suitable for storing this famous type of cheese, head over the Cheddar Caves and Gorge. The attraction is features regular tours, walks and climbs of the caves and gorges. There are also shops and cafes on site as well.

Although the brewery industry is not as strong during it's 19th century heyday, it still continues to be a popular attraction in Shepton Mallet. One place that is ideal for tasting ciders or any other type of alcoholic beverage such as wine is the Avalon Vineyards. Admission is free to the vineyard. This vineyard is known for producing reputable beverages with traditional methods and organic produce.

Although there is accommodation available in Shepton Mallet, it is advisable to also pursue other options in the nearby villages. With so many tourist attractions, it will not be difficult to find accommodation. Due to Shepton Mallet's history as a market town, fresh produce is readily available. A visit to Kilver Court and the local farmer's market are the best options for purchasing fresh produce. In addition, there are plenty of restaurants and pubs in town, many serving local ales and ciders that reflect Shepton Mallet's brewery heritage industry.
