South Shields

Marsden Rock, Near South Shields

Situated on the mouth of the River Tyne in eastern County Durham city of South Shields. The discovery of stone inscriptions suggests the earliest inhabitants belonged to a Celtic tribe known as the Brigantes. A Roman fort at one time supplied soldiers along Hadrian's Wall and ruins of the settlement remain. During the 9th century, Vikings invaded the territory and controlled most of northern England.

However, South Shields was not formally established until the year 1245. Conveniently located on the river, the town became a prosperous fishing port.

Salt panning became an industry in 1499. During the Victorian period, coal mining also supported the local economy. As industries developed, the population increased, adding more opportunities for advancement. During the middle of the 1800s, a ship building industry formed, and this combined with local coal mining continued as major revenue until both closed in the 20th century. As a port and supplier of ships, South Shields fell under attack during World Wars I and II. The town now serves as a centre of commerce and a popular tourist destination.

Activities and Attractions

Explore ancient history with a visit to the Arbeia Roman Fort and Museum. Archaeologists believe the settlement was originally used to house a garrison of troops, but developed into a supply unit for the 17 forts established along Hadrian's Wall. Digs occurring during the last 23 years unearthed the fort, a civilian settlement and a cemetery. An interpretive reconstruction demonstrates life for a typical Roman soldier and a commanding officer. A museum on the site contains relics from the fort, civilian settlement and cemetery.

South Shields Museum and Art Gallery tells the tale of civilization from the Bronze Age to present day through archaeological, historical and natural exhibits.

Breath in the fresh air while exercising on any of the cycling and walking paths, as South Shields contains many parks. The South Marine Park has a boating lake, miniature railway and local wildlife. The coast has at least six miles of sandy beaches and shoreline, in addition to a family orientated amusement park filled with attractions for all ages. Visitors have the opportunity to step back in time by visiting the nearby Tynemouth Priory and Castle. The ruins on the site tell the tale of how the location went from settlement to monastery to a battlement defence against invading forces. Though ancient, the 13th century church is largely intact.

Those looking for adventure might partake in the Tynemouth Mystery Treasure Trail. Guests may choose to embark on a mystery solving mission, journey on a treasure hunt or solving a spy code.

Places to Stay and Dining

Some popular hotels overlook the beachfront and the activities of the River Tyne. These modern facilities provide guests with a wide range of conveniences including flat screen TVs, DVD players and beverage making facilities. The town also has a well-known hotel chain, which actually sits close to the central part of the city.
