St. Austell

Eden Project Nr St Austell

St. Austell is the largest town in Cornwall, with a resident population of approximately 25,000. It's a popular holiday destination during the summer months, hosting thousands of visitors that double or triple the size of the town during the month of August. It is often referred to as the capital of the Cornish Alps. The largest attractions in the area are the Eden Project, St. Austell Brewery, China Clay Country Park and the Lost Gardens of Heligan.

St. Austell has several historical buildings that are reminiscent of architectural styles of the 18th and 19th centuries. Many of St. Austell's buildings were designed by renowned English architect Silvanus Trevail, whose designs can be seen in several of Cornwall's schools, hotels and homes. Other notable architecture in St. Austell includes the Italian Renaissance-styled Town Hall built in 1844, the Masonic Hall built in 1900, Holy Trinity Church, and the Friends Meeting house.

The Eden Project is an eco-attraction built on a former clay mine site that is comprised of several stunning gardens and enclosures known as biomes, that mimic specific regions such as the tropical rainforests of South America, and the balmy Mediterranean. Shopping at the Eden Project offers some unique items, as the vast majority of the items available for purchase are made of natural or recycled materials, organic, fair trade or locally produced.

The Lost Gardens of Heligan is a popular tourist attraction that consists of more than 200 acres of beautiful gardens, lush plants, a variety of bird species in an almost magical atmosphere. The Lost Gardens were an integral part of the mysterious Tremayne family estate fro more than 400 years before falling into major disrepair that lasted for almost 75 years. Rediscovered in the 1990s, much of the estate's gardens have been restored to their original glory. Here tourist walk on paths that contain whimsical sculptures, romantic Victorian gardens and a boardwalk that snakes over tropical ponds lined with giant bamboo and exotic foliage.

Accommodations in St. Austell run the gamut from traditional full-service hotels, B&Bs, self-catering cabins and bungalows to family-friendly beachside touring and camping parks. Many of the offerings not only have spectacular views, but are also within walking distance of local attractions. St. Austell is located 30 miles west of the Devon border, and 10 miles south of Bodmin. Public transportation includes train and bus service, with railway lines connecting from Plymouth, London and the North England region.
