Located only three kilometres south of Glastonbury in Somerset, the village of Street lies along the River Brue near the Polden Hills. Possibly one of the most understated market towns in the region, Street offers first-time visitors the opportunity to enjoy days out indulging in retail therapy as well as excursions into the expansive Somerset countryside. Surely, if you are in search of an out-of-the-way holiday destination in Somerset, look no further than Street this travel season.
Street History
From a historical perspective, Street was born during the Roman period of Britain's history. A number of prized Roman artefacts have been unearthed in the area today known as Street and Glastonbury, the town's "big brother" on the northern bank of the River Brue. Street was also recorded in William the Conqueror's Domesday Book, codified in the 11th century.
However, during the 12th century, Glastonbury Abbey suffered much damage as the result of a fire, and a purpose-built causeway was constructed between the burned abbey and a stone quarry across the river. Today, Street rests along this ancient road, which inextricably links the town to the heritage of Glastonbury, one of the most travelled destinations in the whole of Somerset.
What to Do in Street
Street has all of the pastoral charm and genuine hospitality of a quintessential market village in south-west Britain. From explorations of the countryside to shopping the high street, first-time visitors to Street will find plenty to do whilst in town for the day. The village still puts on a weekly country market on Thursdays and features locally grown produce, farm-fresh cheeses and hand-made crafts, as well.
Clark Village rests on the north-west side of town centre and claims to be the very first purpose-built outlet shopping facility in the country. Inside of Clark Village you can choose from more than 80 bargain retail shops, cafes and restaurants. Without a doubt, first-time travellers in search of much-needed retail therapy would do well to have a day out in Street.
For travellers with an interest in exploring the Somerset countryside, the Street Heath Nature Reserve provides ample opportunity to enjoy the region's outstanding natural beauty. In addition, visitors interested in the town's medieval history would do well to visit the 14th century Church of the Holy Trinity, located in town centre.
Street Transport
Due to the village's rather small stature, the rail no longer passes through Street, but still, Street is readily accessible by road. For motoring directions from Bristol, travel the A37/Wells Road south to the A361 interchange. Then, continue west across the River Brue utilising the A39 to Glaston Road in order to arrive straightaway in Street town centre.
Street Places to Stay
If you decide to stay the evening whilst enjoying a day out in Street, you will discover the best accommodations conveniently located along the high street near Clark Village. But if you are in search of a countryside bed and breakfast in Street, look to reserve accommodations north of the high street.
