History of Tamworth
According to local historians, settlement of the area today known as Tamworth actually began during the reign of the Saxon kings in the first millennium. In reality, Tamworth sits on top of the large former Saxon capital of Mercia. Significant, archaeological evidence unearthed in Tamworth attests to this historical fact.
During the Norman period of Tamworth's history, Tamworth was the site of much conflict which led to the construction of Tamworth Castle, a structure that stands to this very day in the midst of town centre. In a similar manner as other towns in Staffordshire, Tamworth earned its first market charter during the early Middle Ages. Tamworth's vitally strategic position high above two rivers led to centuries of additional conflicts until the 17th and 18th centuries. Since these centuries, Tamworth remained a peaceful market town poised to prosper for years to come.
