History

Taunton's history as a town dates back to the Saxon era. During this time period, it was established as a fortified town and the site of a Saxon mint. The town would continue to rise in importance when the bishops of Winchester established a monastery in 948.

Throughout the middle ages, Taunton continued to grow. Taunton castle as well as the rest of the town expanded throughout the 13th and 16th centuries. Until the end of the 18th century, the trade of wool was a thriving industry for Taunton.

In the 19th century, the opening of the canal revived the economy of Taunton. Taunton became a centre of trade. Today, Taunton is undergoing another regeneration by pedestrianizing many areas and restoring historical sights.

Attractions

For first-time visitors, taking Taunton's heritage trail is an ideal way to learn about the town. The heritage trail is a self-guided walking tour that leads visitors in a circular motion around the town. This trail leads visitors to the many points of historical interest that highlights Taunton's 1100 years of history. Visitors follow the gold plaques in the pavement around the town. The centre itself provides a variety of services such as booking theatre tickets or providing discount vouchers for local attractions.

One of the most popular local attractions is the church of St. Mary Magdalene. Although there the church dates back to the 12th century, the tower of the church was restored in 1862. The tower of St. Mary Magdalene is significant because it's follows the architectural tradition of Somerset towers. The interior of the church is a reflection of the extravagance of the Tudor era prior to the Reformation.

Other attractions include the Hestercombe Gardens, which is 40 acres of gardens originally designed by the legendary garden architect, Gertrude Jekyll. Today the garden is a popular destination for a day outside with friends and family, weddings, and cultural hesitations that are held throughout the year.

In addition, there is the Taunton County Museum and Castle that highlights the history of Taunton, including the roles of the bishops of Winchester in the 12th century, who built the castle.
