Teignmouth

Teignmouth Pier, Devon

This Devon seaside town lies between Torquay and Exeter on the North bank of the River Teign, in southwestern England. Ravaged by foreign invasions, wars and pirating, the little town remains a lucrative port and seaside holiday resort. The first documented settlements were two villages on either side of a stream called the Tame during the middle 11th century. The settlements received market status in the middle of the 13th century, and the location was recognized as a major port by the 14th century.

It was around this time that the town was attacked by the French. During the late 17th century, Teignmouth fell victim to privateering pirates. The town continued to survive and with the introduction of the railroad in 1846, the fishing industry was replaced with tourism. World War I and II cost the town many lives, businesses and homes because of bombings. Once again, the little town survived, began reconstruction, and continues flourishing today.

Activities and Attractions

Guests experience amazing sunrises and romantic sunsets anywhere along Teignmouth's long line of beachfront. Enjoy leisurely strolls on the beach or on the coastal promenade that meanders past seaside storefronts and an amusement park. The park contains arcade games and rides for the entire family. Relax on the beach in the sun, or partake in any number of water activities. Beachfront stores provide a wide range of equipment whether visitors desire to rent boats, go paddle boarding, sailing or windsurfing. Local cruisers also entertain guests with fishing excursions or tours of the bay.

A ferry traverses across the river to nearby Shaldon, where guests have the opportunity to visit secluded beaches, the Wildlife Trust reserve or enjoy the weekly 1785-day celebrations. Located in a Victorian building in the heart of town lies the Teignmouth Museum. Exhibits include air travel, maritime and the railway history of the area through the ages. Learn about local shipwrecks and sunken treasures, a race around the world surrounded by mystery, and the trials and tribulations of the local railroad. An entertaining night out might include a visit to the Carlton Theatre to see a live performance play or musical, or perhaps a concert. Performances are presented by local amateurs and touring professionals.
