Tiverton

If you are planning a holiday to the vast national parks of Devon, Dartmoor and Exmoor, consider a stay in Tiverton, located in Mid Devon between the two expansive parks. The largest town in Mid Devon, Tiverton rests comfortably on the confluence of the River Exe and River Lowman.

Tiverton's history dates as far back as the Stone and Iron Age. And the remains of the old earthwork fort Cranmore Castle loom atop Exeter Hill near town. Tiverton Castle, constructed in the early 12th century, once played role in the English Civil War when the structure came under siege by Parliamentarian forces led by Thomas Fairfax.

Tiverton Transportation

Travelling to Tiverton is relatively easy by rail, or by car. If you are visiting from the Bristol area, follow the M5 motorway south to the A361 interchange and travel west direct to Tiverton. The A396/Exeter Road connects Tiverton to its large neighbour to the south. And by rail, Tiverton is well served by the Tiverton Parkway, providing connections from London, Exeter, and Bristol as well.

What to Do in Tiverton

The Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life deserves a mention as a must see for first time visitors. Here, travellers can view some of the regions most famous artefacts and historical collections. In town, there is also the Tivoli Cinema and a modern comedy club named the New Hall Theatre, which has hosted some of Britain's most famous comics.

Yet another must see landmark in Tiverton is Bickleigh Castle, which dates back as far as the 11th century. The structure is less of a formal castle than a fortified house situated in the River Exe Valley. And the grounds are open to the public five days a week up to the end of September.

Located a few miles to the north of town centre, you will find Knightshayes Court and Gardens, an old Victorian style mansion. Interestingly, the structure was conceived by the infamously flamboyant architect William Burgess. And the mansion's peculiar lavishness exists to this very day. Knightshayes even houses a full service restaurant and is open for public tours during the warmer months from March to November.

Tiverton's location between Exmoor and Dartmoor National Parks makes the town ideal for camping and caravanning. And after dark entertainment along Fore street for example makes for a perfect way to end a day in the parks.

Exmoor National Park has a reputation as one of the more mysterious moorlands in all of Britain. And any visit to the park's vast grounds would be incomplete without sighting the rare and majestically beautiful Exmoor ponies.

Accommodations in Tiverton

Tiverton accommodations have quite a good reputation among first time visitors. The town's hospitality and services have few rivals in Mid Devon. And every type of accommodation is available in and around town.

Indeed, some of the most requested hotels and bed and breakfasts lie along the banks of the river east of town centre. But a short distance on the outskirts of town, you have your choice of many quality self-catering and guest houses readily available. So if you are in search of a holiday destination in Mid Devon, you would do well to look no further than Tiverton.
