Usk

A Classic Windmill Above A Green Field In The Usk Valley

An Introduction to Usk

Usk is a very small town in Monmouthshire, Wales, UK that was first founded as a Roman legionary fortress in 55 A.D. It was discovered later that the location presented difficulties as a strategic center and the legions were moved southward to Caerleon. The town is bound by hills and is located on a ‘not-so-navigable’ river, yet it is a beautiful valley town that is admired for its quaint amenities. The population numbers between two and three thousand people in this community of small shops, old houses, pubs and restaurants dotting Bridge Street and winding through noteworthy Tyne Town Square. Some of the structures date back to the 1400s and though the fortresses lay buried in ruins, markers in the form of plaques can be found along the roadway designating a series of the smaller forts established by the Romans.

Its Norman history of the mid 12th century involves border disputes between the English and the Welsh and portrays several elitist castles of that day and time. One primary castle was built by Richard de Clare, the second Earl of Pembroke. It still remains today but cannot be readily viewed due to the surrounding trees planted in the early 20th century. The de Clare family constructed a hospital for lepers which became dormant as the disease died out. Usk was burned to the ground in 1403 during the Welsh Revolt and is the primary reason that the oldest structures found in Usk date back only to the 1400s.

Noteworthy Spots in Usk

One of the most unique and well-known spots in Usk is the Sessions House which contains two separate court rooms for judicial proceedings. Originally, the Sessions was built by Thomas Wyatt in 1877. One court burnt in 1944 and was finally replaced in 1974. It has now been restored to its original appearance and function after 12 long years of work and 200,000 pounds spent on the enormous project.

The HM Prison is maintained and staffed by Her Majesty’s Prison Service. It is an old Victorian structure that operates from a central rotunda. Rotund prison facilities are considered some of the safest in the world due to the total 360 degree view of all cells provided to the prison guards. Today it functions as an Adult Category C Prison for Vulnerable Prisoners who are primarily sex offenders.

The remaining two castles in the Usk region attract much attention as people travel through the area to observe some of its local history. Richard de Clare’s castle is still a noteworthy structure.

Thomas Allgood developed a process of painting on tin for decorative purposes. The art became known as Pontypool japan as Allgood resided in the nearby town of Pontypool. His two grandsons began production in Usk using this same technique and made Usk famous for this form of decorative art.

Usk Island is really a park area on the edge of the River Usk. The park is meadow grass surrounded by woodlands. There is a large playground located in the meadow which the people refer to as an adventure playground.

Brecon Beacons National Park is a great place for exploration, bird-watching and to generally appreciate all that Wales has to offer.

Tyne Town Square sits in the middle of some of the most beautiful, old stone buildings, and the Square itself resembles a centerfold in a flower magazine. The Usk Rural Life Museum sits in the center of town.

The Usk Castle hosts performances of the Usk Castle Players who perform from time to time. They started their group in 2005 to promote awareness of the castle and its historical value. People came from great distances to see the performance of Battle & Banquet done in spectacular “son et lumiere” style.

Other Usk activities include golfing, swimming and fishing.
