The community lies close to the River Dove, in the eastern region of Staffordshire. Unearthed axes and tools date human habitation to the Bronze Age. The area also likely saw Roman activity, as it was located in close proximity to two Roman forts, the Rocester and the Stramshall. Many believe Uttoxeter began as an Anglo/Saxon settlement aptly named Wuttuceshaeddre. Since 1086, the town's name has reportedly had 79 different spellings.
The mainstay of the Uttoxeter economy has for centuries evolved around agriculture and farming, and was well known for its butter and cheese products. Dairy farms continue providing quality products today.
During the medieval period, wealthy landowners rented small parcels of land to tenant farmers for raising crops and grazing livestock. The manor house and properties generally passed from one wealthy family to another. Landowners cleared forests to expand holdings and agricultural production. The Lord of the Manor generally financed buildings constructed in Uttoxeter. Uttoxeter also had various small trades that included barrel, plough and wagon making. Bakers, blacksmiths along with cloth makers and tanners also existed. With access to the waterways, Uttoxeter markets provided exotic produce and spices. As smaller village markets closed, Uttoxeter markets grew.
