Walton-On-Thames

Mute Swans Nr Walton On Thames

These northern Surrey lands along the river first attracted a Celtic people known as the Wealas. The Romans and Saxons later followed. In 1086, the territory was owned by two wealthy noblemen and the area consisted of farmland, livestock, one church and two mills. Besides agricultural grains, crops frequently included beans, peas, potatoes and turnips. Before the 19th century ended, almost half the borough's population was employed as farm laborers. The community eventually evolved into having a main street and surrounding residential housing.

One local manor house served as a hospital, during the first world war, for soldiers from New Zealand. Walton-On-Thames commemorated these men with a war memorial and street names. Lying within close proximity to Brooklands, the location of aircraft manufacturing during the second war, subjected Walton-On-Thames to several aerial attacks by the German Air Force.

Beginning in the 1920s, Walton-On-Thames had a filming studio where the 1950s television series "Adventures of Robin Hood" was recorded. The Monty Python comedy series also used Walton-On-Thames as a backdrop for numerous episodes. Famous former residents include actress/singer Julie Andrews and musician, singer/songwriter Nick Lowe.

Activities and Attractions

Boat hires and cruises prevail along the river. Some day boats may be rented and used on overnight excursions, as they convert into floating tents. These sizable vessels were featured in films that included "Shakespeare in Love" and "Harry Potter and the Golden Goblet."

Visitors might also join a cruise up the River Thames to Hampton Court, once the palace of Henry VIII. The location is also accessible by bus or train. Inside the palace, visitors have the chance to explore various rooms in the structure including the kitchen, with its massive fireplaces and stoves, and the great hall where guests feasted. Gaze upon the monarch's artwork and personal belongings, in addition to personal effects owned by his many wives. Period costumed presenters provide a unique visit, allowing guests to step back in time and experience the daily activities of the Tudor palace and grounds.

St. Mary's Church at Walton-On-Thames holds a long line of history throughout the years since the structure's original construction in 1150. Five pillars and the north wall remain from the first building. Within the church, guests explore local history, which includes medieval chapels and brasses, along with an elaborate sculpture gracing the Shannon Memorial.
