Warwick

Warwick, the county town of Warwickshire, is situated in the West Midlands of Britain south-west of Birmingham. And every travel season thousands of holidaymakers converge upon Warwick in order to enjoy days out along the high street and guided tours of Warwick Castle, one of the most well preserved fortifications in the whole of Britain.

From a historical standpoint, human settlement of the area today known as Warwick dates as far back as the Stone Age, according to some estimates. During the Saxon era of Britain's history however, Warwick became an important settlement in the ancient kingdom of Mercia. In the Middle Ages Warwick was again re-fortified and the city was "walled in", yet another testament to the rather harrowing history of the town. And today, the gates of the old medieval walls still stand as they were centuries ago, which makes a visit to Warwick essential for travellers interested in Britain's historical sites of interest.

Warwick Castle

Warwick's choice high street shops notwithstanding, Warwick Castle still remains the town's most visited attraction. Magnificently preserved, Warwick Castle rests on the banks of the River Avon and stands watch over the town and surrounding landscape. Constructed in the 11th century by William the Conqueror, Warwick Castle served the Earls of Warwick for centuries until the castle's conversion to a private estate in the 16th century.

Every year thousands of day trippers pass through Warwick in order to walk the well manicured gardens, stately halls, and allegedly haunted watch towers and dungeon. Interestingly, Warwick Castle today is operated and maintained by the internationally famous Madame Tussauds. Life-like wax work exhibitions of daily life in the castle captivate visitors of all ages. And best of all, the castle grounds are available for guided tours for the vast majority of the year.

What's On in Warwick

The town of Warwick is well regarded for other sites of interest in addition to the town's castle. The medieval gates to the town still tower over the town centre landscape and attract as many history enthusiasts as Warwick Castle. Warwick plays host to a variety of community-inspired festivals such as the Warwick Folk Festival, one of the largest such celebrations in the whole of Britain. And the May Music Festival is yet another popular event held annually in the town of Warwick.
