Towards the centre of County Durham lies the northeastern English town of Washington. Speculation exists whether the origin of the name is Anglo/Saxon, Germanic or Old English. The town was seemingly started in the late 1100s when William FitzPatric exchanged lands in Hertburn for lands in Wessyngton with the Bishop of Durham. Here the nobleman built a manor estate, which later became the Old Hall. The estate grew from land purchases or from land acquired through marriage.
The name eventually transformed into Washington, and the family is believed to be descendants of George Washington, first president of the United States.
Villages developed around the manor house and sprawled out into the surrounding areas. Over a dozen of these villages comprise the town of Washington. Agriculture and coal mining sustained the area's economy for centuries. Present industries include car manufacturing, chemical production, electronics and electrical products along with textiles. Washington was officially declared a new town in 1964.
