Watford

Chenies Manor House Nr Watford

Situated on a small hill overlooking the River Colne, the town was formed in the southwestern region of Hertfordshire. Occupied since prehistoric times, the Celts and Romans also passed through the area. The town began as a Saxon settlement and was first mentioned in written documentation in the year 1007. Though largely an agricultural community, a brewing industry started as early as the 1600s.

The village grew slowly until the 1790s when the Grand Union Canal passed through the area and roads across the Chilterns improved. These routes enhanced trade imports and exports. A gas company was established in 1834 and the newly formed canal provided power for various mill run factories. A papermaking mill developed and a printing industry formed shortly thereafter.

The railway arrived in 1837, which further improved local trades and allowed Watford to become a commuter location for those employed in London. The city now has important entertainment, retail and service industries. Famous individuals born in Watford include former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell and actor Vinnie Jones.
