The combination rural and urban city lies in the central part of Hertfordshire and is the second garden city designed and developed by Ebenezer Howard. The philosophy behind the concept includes creating a self-sufficient community that provides employment, housing and leisurely activities along with public services all in one location. The 1920s ideology also included a means of developing the town while sparing the natural surroundings. After Howard acquired the land, a company formed to assist in the town's design and construction. The community has its own environmental protection agency and legislation.

Developers created tree lined streets, a mile long scenic parkway and a town centre exhibiting neo-Georgian red brick archetecture. The city now contains a massive sports centre, shopping mall and a film studio. Quite a selection of electronics companies and food processing plants developed in designated areas Welwyn. Welwyn Garden City was once the home of Nabisco Shredded Wheat breakfast cereal. Car parking services include two multilevel facilities within a short distance from major shopping districts. Stanborough Park encompasses 51 hectares (126 acres) of open spaces and has two lakes, which are frequently used for boating, sailing and windsurfing.
