The village lies in the north central area of Surrey. The area was originally the property of a Mercian king who bestowed the West Byfleet region to the Chertsey Abbey during the seventh century. The borough is a little over one mile away from the ancient village known as Byfleet. By 1312, the land belonged to Edward II.
West Byfleet was a sparsely populated, rural farming community for centuries. The village experienced an increase in prosperity, with respect to trade and industry, after the establishment of the Wey Navigational Canal in 1653. Additionally, the Bussington Canal lies north of the village.
However, West Byfleet did not undergo substantial growth until the railway passed through the area in 1827. The heart of the town developed into a market area having various trade shops that included hardware stores, independent grocers and wine merchants. The residential districts formed around this central location. The greatest population growth and housing expansion occurred during the first and second world wars. What was once the main shopping area now contains restaurants and service businesses with shopping districts located elsewhere.
Activities and Attractions
Being located close to two canals provides the opportunity for pleasant, leisurely walks or cycling journeys along the waterways. The level, paved paths allow locals and visitors alike to enjoy the scenic landscape that includes native plants, wildlife and quaint cottages. When in need of a break or refreshment, independently owned cafes and restaurants lie along the way.
Those enjoying activities on the water may hire day boats and cruise along the canal. Fishing enthusiasts appreciate the fact that there are over 50 species of fish in the waters of West Byfleet. The community also has a golf club and course, suitable for amateurs and professionals.
