History
Although Weston-Super-Mare's oldest structure dates back to the Iron Age, much of its history has been influenced by the Victorian Era. Like many other small towns that dot the coast of the United Kingdom, Weston-Super-Mare became a popular tourist destination with the arrival of the railway and the development of beachfront hotels. The first hotel in Weston-Super-Mare was built in 1808.
Weston-Super-Mare also benefited from the defence industry as it was an ideal port during World War II and it's role as a centre of helicopter production. Its military legacy continues to live on in the helicopter museum.
Today, Weston-Super-Mare is a popular vacation spot for older generations as well as young families due to its wealth of activities and events throughout the year and it's award-winning beaches.
Attractions
With one of the longest stretches of naturally occurring coastline in the United Kingdom, one of the most popular activities in Weston Super Mare is laying out on it's sandy beaches. Throughout the year, many activities take place somewhere on the beach, such as the extremely popular sand sculpture festival. Each year, the festival chooses a different theme for the construction of the sculptures. There are plenty of sculptures available for viewing during the festival's duration that lasts from late May to September.
Another fascinating attraction is the Wooky Hole Caves, a set of underground cave chambers located outside of Weston Super Mare near the city of Wells. The cave is known for it's naturally formed life-like statue of a sorceress named Wooky, who is the inspiration for many local legends due to her petrified expression. The caves itself is not just a tourist attraction but also a location where the famous cheddar cheese that originates from this area rests.
Other popular activities include a visit to the recently refurbished pier, learning about local history at the Weston Super Mare Museum, observing sea life at the Seaquarium, exploring Jill's Garden and Grove Park, and watching a show at the theatres in town, Playhouse Theatre and Winter Gardens.

With all the different attractions available, the amount of options for accommodation is comparable. Weston Super Mare is historically a tourist town and has plenty of places for lodging, such as historical hotels, quiet bed and breakfast establishments, and self-catering accommodation.
There is also no dearth for food as well. The pier itself boasts a variety of snack bars, restaurants and cafes. Also, there are many food establishments that are located along the seafront as well as within the city centre.
