Located in the northern part of Surrey, Weybridge started as a Saxon farming community. The Chertsey Abbey and noblemen owned the land in 1086. In Weybrige's early history, the territory was considered nothing more than a river crossing, being situated close to the River Wey.
In 1537, Henry VIII constructed the Oatlands Palace. Here the monarch married his fifth wife, Catherine Howard. The palace was demolished in 1650 and the masonry obtained from the structure was used to construct the Wey Navigational Canal. This canal was one of the first in the country and allowed export and import on a worldly basis via the River Thames.
The village remained small until the railway arrived in 1838. After this time, the expansive manor houses attracted the wealthy to the area and encouraged town development. The first worldwide camping and recreation area was developed here in 1901. Weybridge also had the world's first motor racing circuit, constructed in 1907. The secluded location soon attracted aviators and aircraft designers. The site eventually developed into the location of many aircraft manufacturing facilities.
Weybridge boasts many famous former residents including John Lennon, Ringo Starr and Cliff Richard.
