Wigton

The small market town lies in northern Cumbria, between the Caldbeck fells and the Solway coast. Chieftain tribes first settled the area during the 7th century, followed by the Vikings during the 9th century, and the Normans roughly two centuries later, when it became a Norman barony. Wigton was established as a market town during the early part of the 13th century. Two becks supplied water and power for the various industries, which included brewing and textiles, along with grain and wood milling.

Similar to many medieval towns of the time, the growing community housed a market where agricultural and locally produced commodities were sold. The barony also created the Inglewood Forest, which at one time included the town of Wigton and served as the royal hunting reserve. By the 20th century, a plastics industry developed in Wigton. The company continues to employ many local residents today. The once medieval market town mainly contains buildings depicting Georgian architecture.

Activities and Attractions

The unusual market square is actually triangular and displays an elaborate memorial fountain constructed in the 19th century by George Moore, in honour of his late wife. The granite structure contains a floral display and four bronze sculptured reliefs, each depicting an act of mercy. Strolling through town, visitors find that many buildings have a history and a tale to tell, as is the case with the local King's Arms Hotel. The location was once the site of a coaching inn, and boasts at having Charles Dickens as an overnight guest.

Wigton is the start for many biking and hiking journeys throughout the region, whether trekking across the Solway Plain or setting off for a climbing adventure at Caldbeck Fells. Local places of interest include the Knoxville Wildlife Rescue assists animals back into the wild after receiving treatment for various injuries, and the facility welcomes guests to visit the animals and observe the daily activities of the facility staff. Close to neighbouring Carlisle, a former military airfield now serves as a wildlife reserve. The location has trails for biking or walking and provides guided tours. Engineers created a wide range of environments, which include forested areas, meadows and wetlands.

Places To Stay and Dining

Depending on the degree of comfort and luxury desired, Wigton has dozens of hotels, bed and breakfasts, guesthouses and self-catering cottages. Some are conveniently located in town while others allow guests to unwind in the English countryside. With the exception of self-catering cottages, all of the facilities serve meals daily.

Various restaurants, bistros, cafes and pubs serve everything from fast food or snacks to fine dining in historic or modern atmospheres. Cuisine in the area typically includes traditional English, Asian, European and Italian.
