Wilmslow

Quarry Bank Mill In Wilmslow

Wilmslow is a Cheshire area town that is found south of major metropolitan city Manchester. The town is significant with over thirty thousand residents. It is best known for its wealth and pricey houses. Visitors come here to see the famous people who reside here and to partake of the expensive Cheshire lifestyle, since this is among the most highly desirable and expensive places to call home outside of central London.

History and Geography

The history of Wilmslow before the railroad arrived is brief. It had an importance in the Iron Age that was uncovered when the Lindow Man was found in the Lindow Moss. This person had been well preserved within the peat bogs for around two thousand years. Unfortunately, visitors can not see him here, since he was transferred to the British Museum and resides as the central figure in the Iron Age exhibit.

Until the train arrived in 1842, there was only a church and a couple of farms in Wilmslow. The area has long been renowned for its Cheshire country lifestyle. The town centre today is based on Bank Square and two other streets Water Lane and Grove Street. The Bank Square name comes from its sloping down towards The Carrs recreational fields, and its sloping up to the train station. Ironically, most of the town's banks are also found here on the square.

Architecture

Visitors will enjoy looking at the River Bollin that runs through The Carrs. Quarry Bank Mill that created power from the river in the past can be seen here. It is a national trust site that delights visitors and the locals.

Three different Church of England buildings are also in Wilmslow. St. Bartholomew's resides in its building from the 1500's. It features a bell tower that is turreted. There are also St. John's and St. Anne's churches to enjoy. Another historical religious building is the Dean Row Chapel that lies just two miles east of the centre of town. This Listed Building of architectural importance was constructed at the conclusion of the 1600's. It began life as a Presbyterian chapel, but visitors who see it today are looking at a Unitarian chapel.

Attractions

The real attraction to travelers in this town of England is the search to see the famous Cheshire image and lifestyle. People watching is a fun past time here, since many wealthy and well known residents choose to call Wilmslow home. Many footballers and wealthy Northwest business men, as well as the stars of "Coronation Street," live here. This appeal dates from the Victorian times, as it became a place that wealthy regional and national figures wanted to live after the railroad connected the town with other parts of England. There are plenty of cafes, pubs, restaurants, and shops to sit in and watch the rich pass by, or where a visitor might hope to mingle with them.
