Windermere

St Martins Church At Windermere

Located in the Lake District National Park, the small town of Windermere sits closer to the southern region of Cumbria. Windermere lies one half mile to the east of the famous lake with the same name, and the Romans and Vikings, followed by the Celts and the Angles, most likely occupied the area. Historians believe the sheep herds located throughout the region are direct descendants of primitive Viking herds. Along with agriculture and fishing, the mining industry developed as early as the 12th century.

The vast waterways not only supplied the area with power, but also served as transport for locally grown and produced commodities. The little town, filled with Victorian homes, was not widely recognized until the introduction of the railway in the middle of the 19th century. Now, Windermere serves as a main hub of transportation to and from the lake.

Activities and Attractions

Strolling through town, one can take in the splendour of the Victorian architecture. Taxis, buses and a railway service the town and surrounding regions, but the location is widely renowned for Lake Windermere. A 20-minute walk from town brings visitors to the lake's shore, surrounded on the other side by picturesque mountains. Most of the town's entertainment evolves around the lake. History, legends and myths abound in the area, and stories relate to the lake itself or to one the elaborate estates constructed on the lake.

Guests may enjoy any number of water sports on the lake, as local businesses provide equipment and chartered tours. Tours of the lake extend from two hours to a full day with meals and entertainment provided. Canoeing, kayaking and sailing, along with fishing and swimming are favourite pastimes. Biking and walking paths are plentiful and are designed to highlight the spectacular scenery of the Lake District. Those seeking adventures that are more strenuous might indulge in mountaineering on the opposite side of the lake.

Places To Stay and Dining

Windermere has a wide choice of hotels, bed and breakfasts, self-catering cottages or hostels. Many rooms have lake front views, and all provide modern amenities in a comfortable English setting. Camping and caravan sites are also plentiful.

A number of privately owned and operated eateries are conveniently located in Windermere and neighboring Bowness. Many restaurants are located within hotels or bed and breakfast accommodations, but bistros, cafes and pubs serve everything from quick snacks to full meals, along with a wide selection of beverages. Meal preparation involves using locally grown ingredients and visitors may find traditional English, Asian and Indian cuisine.
