About Cardiganshire

Cardiganshire

Cardiganshire, also known as Ceredigion, lies on the west coast of Wales. It is home to some fantastic Welsh architecture and historical sites such as Aberystwyth Castle, Cwmystwyth Mines, Elvis Rock, Strata Florida Abbey and the Welsh Gold Centre at Tregaron.

The main town of Cardiganshire is Aberystwyth which is home to the popular university. Cardiganshire obtains its Welsh name of Ceredigion from the term ‘Land of Ceredig' who was a chieftain that recaptured the area from the Irish in the 5th century. The word Cardigan is just an English version of the name Ceredigion.

Over 50% of the population of Cardiganshire speaks Welsh so it is a very large Welsh-speaking community. The heavy proportion of English speaking inhabitants tend to be those who attend the university so the actual natives of Cardiganshire are likely to be Welsh speaking than English speaking.

The county is also home to the Hafod Estate, which is famous for being a residence of nobility and landed gentry. It is one of the finest tourist attractions Cardiganshire has to offer with the notorious Devil's Bridge not too far away in Cwmystwyth.
